Polish sport mourns its Legend – Irena Szewińska has passed away

With deep saddness the Polish Volleyball Family has received the news of the death of Irena Szewińska – the most excellent and decorated of Polish athletes, a sport activist dedicated to Polish sport and the international Olympic movement, a warm-hearted person of true kindness.

The Polish Volleyball Federation would like to express our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Irena Kirszenstein-Szewińska was born on May 24, 1946 in Leningrad.

The Polish former track athlete, who specialized in sprint runs and long jump, after finishing her active career became an activist for Polish and international sport organizations. passed away on June 29, 208 in Warsaw, Poland.

She was one of the most decorated Polish athletes and one of the best ever in the history of track-and-field. During her career she won seven Olympic medals: three gold, two silver and two bronze. She was a Polish, European and world record holder in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, in the long jump and the relay. President Andrzej Duda wrote on Twitter "Mrs Irena Szewińska has departed - the First Lady of Polish sport and a dame of the Order of the White Eagle. Winner of 7 Olympic medals, multiple world record holder. A great loss and great sadness. Dear Irena, thank you! You will forever remain in our grateful memory!"
