The stunning gold-plated cup started its journey around the country known as ‘Volleyland’ during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifier held in Wroclaw last week, where the White-and-Reds faced reigning world champions Serbia in a duel for the coveted ticket to Japan. Poland eventually lost to the reigning European champions in four sets.

Zoran Gajić, the President of Volleyball Federation of Serbia, was present on this occasion in Wroclaw, and he received a warm welcome from the President of the Polish Federation, Jacek Kasprzyk. “Indeed, Poland is a sort of Volleyland, people love Volleyball and all events here are organised on a very high level,” praised the hosts Gajić. The captain of the Rio 2016 silver medallists agreed with his opinion: “Poland are a real Volleyball nation, they know and love this sport, so it is always a pleasure to play here. Fans are incredible and the exciting atmosphere goes along with a real sport spirit. As always, we are leaving Poland with beautiful memories thanks to this amazing crowd and - above all - the great success we have achieved,” said Maja Ognjenović.

On Monday, the #EuroVolleyW trophy arrives in Lodz, the host city of the 2019 European Championship. The centrally located Polish city was the venue of the quest for the much-desired European crown also 10 years ago - in the 2009 edition of the tournament, Italy triumphed, with the Netherlands and Poland completing the podium. This year, in the well-known Atlas Arena the bid for the European title starts on August 23 with the Pool B matches featuring the national teams of Poland, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Ukraine. The event lasts until September 4, when two quarterfinal matches will be taking place in Lodz as well – followed by the semis and medal matches in Ankara, Turkey.
After arriving in Lodz, the EuroVolley trophy will be exhibited at the Lodz Events Centre (Lodzkie Centrum Wydarzen) on Piotrkowska Street 87.
About the trophy

The trophy will be in the hands of this year’s European champions – who will emerge in Ankara and Paris for women and men, respectively, this coming September. The golden trophy, weighing 9.6 kilos and measuring 74 cm, is a truly handmade product, whose design reflects the modern, fresh and young CEV brand. It is gold-plated in a galvanic bath of 24 karats gold. The CEV have planned to use this very same trophy for future editions of the continental showpiece event for national teams.
